Coronavirus COVID19 - What we CAN do amidst the chaos!

For the past month or so, you may be seeing only articles relating to the coronavirus.  It is affecting every corner of the world.

 

This is not something to take lightly, however it is great to remember that the media makes money off of clicks.  Their job is to scare, put fear into, and make you think that the world is ending.

 

If they do their job properly, they get paid….a whole lot! Especially if the whole world is involved.  Now I’m not trying to downplay the seriousness of the COVID19 situation, however I do think the amount of mass hysteria created by the media at the very least needs to be addressed so we can look at any news headline with our eyes wide open.

 

In the past few days as I’ve researched this virus, I came across a paper that explained in detail the receptor called ACE2.  The presence of this receptor in human tissues may suggest that the susceptibility, symptoms, and outcome of COVID19 is worse than for those without, and that having an expression of higher levels of ACE2 may be an important determinant in the susceptibility of human infection.  Not everyone has this ACE2 receptor, but so far they have seen it most commonly in East Asian populations.

 

This may be one important distinction as to why certain populations have higher rates of contraction and death. There are other things at play here however. Things like the health of the lungs (65% of Asian males smoke), the ability to receive the proper care, and high density populations, just to name a few. 

 

I wanted to bring this up to raise awareness to the idea that this virus does not affect everyone and every population the same way. There are MANY factors in the seriousness of this virus, and it may show up very differently for different populations.

 

We know this virus affects the respiratory system and anyone with a compromised immune system may have a difficult time fighting off this virus. 

 

Our immune response will try and come to the rescue in getting rid of the virus, however too much of an immune response can lead to worsening symptoms like difficulty breathing, pneumonia etc....we want to boost the immune system in every way possible before, so that if or when we are faced with fighting off this virus, there is no doubt about it; we can kick it’s butt.

 

The media wants you to believe that the only thing you can do to protect yourself against this virus is get a mask, wash your hands, buy all the toilet-paper you can get your hands on, and live in fear.  There are SO many other things you can do to help yourself and your loved ones in this crazy time.  




Don’t touch your face!

  •  What’s even more important than washing hands? NOT touching your mouth, eyes, or nose!  Unless you have an open wound/cut on your hand, or someone sneezes/coughs on you, you cannot contract this virus.  So hand washing is great (soap and water for 20-30 seconds), but even better...don’t touch your face.

 

Keep yourself healthy and strong!

  • Eliminate sugar and processed foods.  Don’t waste your body's energy on dealing with the junk.  Fill up your body with nutrient dense foods that it can easily digest and utilize the nutrients you are giving it.

  • Get out in the sun whenever possible.  Utilize the sun to boost your immune system and don’t over exercise.  Especially during this stressful time, over exercising can put you even more into fight-or-flight mode and suppress your immune system.

  • De-stress in any way that you can.  Write, paint, do yoga, play games with your kids, practice box breathing.  Inhale for 6 counts, hold for 6 counts, exhale for 6 counts, and hold for 6 counts.  This will help your body get into the parasympathetic nervous system which is very healing.

  • Drink lots of filtered water, half your body weight in ounces per day.

  • Sleep right now is more important than ever.  Get your 7-9 hours of sleep to help your body fight off anything that may come its way.

  • 12-14 hours of intermittent fasting while you are sleeping will help your body to be able to focus on healing,repair, and recovery.  (Don’t go more than 12 hours if you have a faster metabolism, remember we don’t want the body to get into fight-or-flight mode either).

  • There are many things in life that are outside of our control, but what we can control is how we respond to them.  When we band together and support/lift each other up that is a great way to reduce anxiety and stress levels. Having a support system (even if you have to create your own) can be extremely helpful in times like this.

 

Immune Boosting Supplements!

  • Vitamin A - is key for a healthy immune system, cell growth and may be especially beneficial in warding off illness.  It can act as a sort of barrier around the cells as well as keep in check your natural immune response.

  • Vitamin C - When Vitamin C is inside the body it boosts the immune system, strengthens the cells, and helps to make the body more alkaline.

  • VItamin D/K - Vitamin D3 is responsible for over 500 processes in the body and is especially good at delivering calcium to the blood.  However proper absorption of Vitamin D3 is difficult without Vitamin K2. It acts as the delivery system for Vitamin D and puts it where your body most needs it.

  • Zinc - Is one of the body’s first responders against infection.  The zinc then interacts with a process that is vital to the fight against infection and by doing so, helps balance the immune response.  It is very difficult to get over a sickness without zinc in the body, if at all.
