There are 4 factors that contribute to developing carpel tunnel syndrome.
1. Forceful gripping
2. Flexion of the wrists
3. High repetition
4. Long duration

Let’s try a little experiment to demonstrate the first 2 risk factors: forceful
gripping and flexing of the wrists.
Straighten your right hand wrist with your palm facing up.
Now place your left hand’s thumb over the carpal ligament.
Bend your right wrist back and feel the ligament tighten over the
tunnel. This position compresses the tunnel.
Now make a fist. Did you feel the tunnel get even tighter?
If you hold this position long enough, you may eventually feel your
hands and fingers go numb. Sustained gripping while extending the
wrist is unhealthy for the median nerve.
Now bring your right wrist back to neutral, then forward. You will feel
the ligament tighten as you move forward.
